The statement, issued from an undisclosed location and signed by BNP Joint Secretary General Salahuddin Ahmed, was circulated to the media on Tuesday.

It says the countrywide shutdown, which was supposed to end on Wednesday 6am has been extended by 48 hours.

The BNP-led coalition has been enforcing an indefinite blockade of roads, rail and waterways since Jan 5 demanding snap polls under a non-party government.

It had been also calling shutdowns regularly to aggravate the situation.

From the beginning of February, there have been shutdowns every working day.

After the arrest of BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Salahuddin Ahmed appears to be the party's spokesperson.

All BNP statements issued from an undisclosed location has his signature.

Salahuddin, however, was not seen in public for weeks.
