Police said no-one was injured in the Monday afternoon incident at the Nightingale intersection.

A witness said a group of about 10 young men emerged from an alley and exploded handmade bombs in front of the private cars that were going to Gulistan.

“Drivers and those on board the cars quickly got out,” Al-Amin said. “The attackers smashed the cars before torching them.”

Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Motijheel Zone Additional Commissioner Anowar Hossain said fire fighters had put out the flames.

The witness said several of the attackers wore masks.

Over a thousand vehicles have been torched during the BNP’s ongoing agitation since Jan 5 that has left more than 100 people dead, mostly in arson.

Earlier, at noon, a bus was set on fire in Gazipur’s Sreepur with ‘gun powder’, injuring several passengers, fire service officials said.
