76 BNP-Jamaat activists arrested in Dhaka

76 BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami leaders and activists have been arrested on charges of involvement in acts of violence and sabotage during the nationwide blockade and shutdown.

The accused have been arrested during the past 24 hours from different parts of the capital until Thursday morning, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Deputy Commissioner (Media) Masudur Rahman.

Police claims the accused were involved in arson, vandalism, hurling petrol bombs and other sabotage acts during blockade and shutdown.

Among the arrested are Jamaat-e-Islami central leader KM Mojibur Rahman and Juba Dal leader Md Ujjal.

Ujjal is the General Secretary of Juba Dal’s Hajaribag unit.

They were arrested on Wednesday noon from Hajaribag area while trying to cause trouble.

Three hand bombs have been recovered from them, said police.

Since Jan 5 after the BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia called for an indefinite blockade throughout the whole country, violent incidents have become a daily occurrence.

So far, 50 people have died in this violence, most in fire-bombing.

Earlier on Tuesday night, 27 leaders and activists of the BNP-Jamaat alliance were arrested and 21 more on Monday.

A reward of Tk 100,000 has been announced by the police and RAB to catch these troublemakers.
