Three burnt in arson attack in Sitakunda

Three people have been burnt in an arson attack on a pick-up van in Sitakunda on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway during a shutdown called by the BNP and its allies.

The attack took place in the Sheikh Para area on Tuesday evening, police said.

Miscreants hurled a petrol bomb at the van of the consumer product manufacturer, Fresh, leaving salesmen Jhantu Paul and Zillur Rahman burnt and driver Anwarul Islam injured, Chittagong's Assistant Superintendent of Police Saiful Islam said.

Jhantu and Zillur were admitted to the Chittagong Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), Nayek Shilbrat Barua of the CMCH police outpost said.

CMCH burns unit registrer Shawrup Chakrabarty said Jhantu suffered 30 percent burn and Zillur 12 percent.

Driver Anwarul was admitted to the CMCH with burn injuries later.

Seven people were killed in a similar attack on a bus on the highway in Comilla in the early hours.

Meanwhile, in the government's bid to prevent violence during protests, a mobile court punished the owners of two petrol pumps in Sitakunda on Tuesday.
