Contractor burnt in Jatrabarhi bus arson dies

Nine days after a petrol bomb was hurled at a bus in Jatrabarhi, a contractor finally succumbed to his injuries at the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).

Nur Alam, 40, the victim, hailed from Sonargaon of Narayanganj. He is survived by two children.

DMCH Police Outpost’s Inspector Mojammel Haque said, “Doctors of the burns unit declared Alam dead on Sunday morning. About 48 percent of his body had been burnt.”

In the same incident, 30 more had been burnt and are undergoing treatment.

Burns unit’s resident Surgeon Partho Shankar Pal said, “The victims of Jan 23 arson had 12 percent to 48 percent of their body burnt. Some of them are improving but are yet to be declared out of danger.”

Police have filed a case against 69 people following the Jatrabarhi arson incident, in which BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has been charged as the ‘instigator’ of violence.

The case read, she called an indefinite blockade on Jan 5 and ordered the BNP leaders and activists to continue their movement until the government stepped down.

At her behest, the troublemakers have unleashed violence in Jatrabarhi, the case documents further said.
