23 die in road crashes in eight districts

Reckless driving has left at least 23 people dead and 15 others injured, including women and children, in road crashes in eight districts across Bangladesh.

Most of Friday’s accidents involved trucks.

Five were killed in Mymensingh, four in Munshiganj and Jhenaidah each, three in Narayanganj, two each in Brahmanbarhia, Sylhet and Sirajganj, and one in Nilphamari.

The Mymensingh crash, between a bus and an autorickshaw, occurred at around 7pm.

The head-on collision near Raghabpur area killed three on the spot while two others died at a hospital, said Kotwali police OC Abu Md Fazlul Karim.

In Munshiganj, a truck hit an autorickshaw and a rickshaw killing three on the spot, including a mother and her son.

The accident at the Upazila’s Jamaldi Bus Stand in the afternoon left another person injured.

In Jhenaidah's Shailakupa, a truck collided with a three-wheeler passenger vehicle, killing four on the spot and injuring four others.

Shailakupa Police Station OC Hashem Khan said the accident took place on the Khulna-Kushtia highway in the afternoon.

Three of the injured were shifted to the Faridpur Medical College and Hospital in a critical state.

Yet another truck mishap left three dead, including a father and his daughter, and severely injured a boy in the evening at Fatullah’s Shantidhara on Dhaka-Narayanganj Link Road.

The truck ran over the victims, who were on a battery-run autorickshaw, said Fatullah police Sub-Inspector Swapan Kumar Das.

Two others died and seven others were injured in two separate incidents in the evening in Brahmanbarhia Sadar and Sarail upazilas.

Both incidents involved trucks. One rammed a motorbike while the other struck an autorickshaw.

In Sylhet, two motorcycle riders died while another was injured after a truck ran over them at Biswanath’s Bagicha Bazar.

The soil-laden truck crushed the riders around 4pm killing one on the spot while the other died at a hospital.

The injured is being treated at the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital.

In Sirajganj, a bus ran over an old man in the morning at Salanga’s Ghurka Beltala.

A Swecchasebak League leader, Abu Hasem Akand, 35, was also killed in a head-on collision between an autorickshaw and a motorbike in Sirajganj’s Belkuchi.

A 10-year-old student died in Nilphamari’s Syedpur in the afternoon when a tractor ran over and killed him on the spot.
