Parliament on Tuesday passed the Power and Energy Fast Supply Enhancement (Special Provision) (Amendment) Act 2015 through a voice vote.

State Minister for Power and Energy Nasrul Hamid Bipu tabled the amendment and ensured its passage.

The Power and Energy Fast Supply Enhancement (Special Provision) Act 2010 was made during the previous Awami League-led government to tackle the shortfall in power production.

The law empowers the government to sign agreements with intending entities through discussion for fast implementation of power and energy-related projects.

The law was initially enacted for two years but the time frame was extended by two more years.

The junior power minister had placed the bill on Nov 30 last year after the Cabinet approved the draft on Aug 25.

After the draft was approved, Cabinet Secretary Muhammad Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan had told reporters: “Experience suggests the law has been very effective.”
