Noted plasma physicist Prof Mofiz Uddin dies

Noted Plasma Physicist Prof Mofiz Uddin Ahmed has passed away.

A professor at BRAC University’s Department of Mathematics and Natural Science, he died on Friday night after suffering a heart attack.

He had been working on gravitating compact objects such as black holes and pulsars, and plasmas around them.

His funeral prayers were held outside the mosque at Uttara’s Sector-4 after Asr prayers, his son Sawel Mofiz Sunny told bdnews24.com.

He will be buried at Uttara cemetery.

Born in Noakhakli’s Hatia in 1954, he received a scholarship to study in Russia after he completed his study at Dhaka College.

With a PhD in Physico-Mathematical Sciences from Russian Peoples’ Friendship University, he completed his post doctoral research at the Institute of Theoretical Physics, Naples in 1984.

The grant for the research was provided by The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics at Trieste, Italy. Prof Mofiz was an associate member of that body.

He authored 95 research papers, seven books and contributed in 43 popular scientific journals.

In recognition to his contributions to science, the professor was awarded the Bangladesh Association for the Advancement of Science medal in 1998.
