The BGB had been out to maintain law and order amid the political turmoil since the BNP-sponsored blockade started on Jan 5.
The BGB chief told a press briefing on Thursday at its Dhaka headquarters that the border guards will support civil administration for as long as necessary.
“Protecting the border is our prime job. But protecting the lives of the people and helping the civil authority is our secondary job and an important one,” said Aziz Ahmed.
In a query about what kind of weapons the BGB had been using, he said, “All BGB weapons are lethal. But BGB personnel will not shoot anyone unless it is to protect lives.”
They have been providing protection to long-distance travellers at night on highways.
Around 80 to 85 platoons of BGB were on constant patrol in 17 districts outside Dhaka, the BGB chief said.
He said authorities had asked for BGB forces in 35 more districts. Around 70 to 75 platoons were prepared to be deployed in those places.
