Officials of the bank said on Sunday when the branch opened after two days of weekly holiday the vault was found unbolted.

Deputy General Manager Ashok Kumar Singha Roy, when contacted by bdnews24.com for comment on the matter, said, “We will brief journalists about the incident later. We will get to know how it happened only after the investigation.”

“From preliminary investigation it appears that more than 15 million has been stolen from the bank,” Kotwali Police Station’s OC Syed Mohsinul Haque told bdnews24.com.

Five persons have been detained in connection with the incident. “Of them, three are members of the Ansar and two are employees of the bank,” the OC said.

They were being interrogated, he added.

A few clients of the bank said when they had gone to withdraw money around 10am, they were initially told that transactions had been hampered as the bank’s computers were hacked.
They were not allowed to withdraw money later.
Journalists were not allowed inside the bank after they rushed there hearing the incident.
