Its spokesperson Imran H Sarkar made the call while speaking at a ‘mass sit-in’ programme at Dhaka’s Shahbagh on Friday.

Sarkar said: “Kamaruzzaman was supposed to be hanged already, but the verdict has not been executed for over two months.”

The International Crimes Tribunal on May 9 last year awarded capital punishment to the Jamaat senior assistant secretary general, who was pro-Pakistani militia Al-Badr’s chief in Mymensingh during the Liberation War in 1971.

The Supreme Court on Nov 3 upheld the tribunal’s verdict.

Sarkar said Kamaruzzaman’s review petition against the verdict was being entertained without legal provision as several countries including the United States and the European Union opposed the verdict.

People had waged agitations demanding death penalty for another Jamaat leader Abdul Quader Molla on Feb 5 last year, when the ICT had sentenced him to life in prison for war-time atrocities.

Imran Sarkar led the mass movement as the spokesperson for Ganajagaran Mancha.
Amid the agitations, the government amended the ICT law and the Supreme Court revised Molla’s sentence to death penalty.
Sarkar said: “Conspiracies are now being plotted to save war criminal Kamaruzzaman by entertaining his review petition. I’m urging you to come onto the streets (to press for his execution) as you did on Feb 5.”
He urged the government to hang Kamaruzzaman immediately and said no one could save him.
