Chittagong defies shutdown

The 20-Party Alliance's shutdown failed to evoke much response in Chittagong.

No untoward incident was reported from the city until afternoon.

Long-haul buses remained grounded but the number of public transport on the roads increased as the day progressed.

Strikers took out several processions but police foiled their attempts.

There was no report of any picketing in the city.

Police were on alert to tackle any untoward incident.

Meanwhile, two strikers were jailed for six months for vandalism in Cox's Bazar.

They are Cox's Bazar Law College's Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal unit General Secretary Karim Taj and the city's JCD unit convenor committee member Jamal Uddin.
