Sunday's order came after the state sought a day's time for a hearing on the business leader's bail plea.

Assistant Attorney General Aminur Rahman said Attorney General Mahbubey Alam would argue the case at the hearing.

But the defence counsel feared Mintoo could be arrested before that.

"The court has issued a verbal order on not arresting or harassing our client until the bail hearing," Mintoo's lawyer Md Ehsanur Rahman told bdnews24.com.

Clashes erupted at Dhaka's Bakshibazar between Awami League and BNP activists on Dec 24 when Khaleda Zia was scheduled to appear before a court in corruption cases.

Ruling party MP Chhabi Biswas was attacked at the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital and his vehicle was set on fire.

Police filed a case over the assault on Biswas at their Shahbagh station naming 23 people including Mintoo.

State counsel Rahman said Sunday's order was limited to this particular case only.

"There is no legal bar to arrest him in other cases," he said.
