“We’ve erred by not giving the indigenous people the constitutional recognition. We should not make the mistake anymore,” he said while at a function at Dhaka University on Monday.

Menon, a member of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina-led Cabinet, had earlier demanded the constitutional recognition of the aboriginals during his speech in Parliament.

The Workers Party leader spoke at the launch of the book ‘A Genesis of Parliamentary Advocacy in Bangladesh’.

Dhaka University history department professor Mezbah Kamal said: “We Bengalis tried to forcefully make the indigenous people Bengalis.

“That’s why they were not given the constitutional recognition and they went for an armed struggle.”
