Daud Merchant rearrested

Abdur Rauf Daud Merchant, convicted for the murder of Indian music baron Gulshan Kumar, has been rearrested in Gazipur as soon as he was released on bail.

Several deputy commissioners of Dhaka Metropolitan Police have confirmed his arrest at Kashimpur prison gate.

Merchant, said to be an aide of Dubai-based Indian mafia Daud Ibrahim, was released around 5:55pm Monday, said Jahangir Alam Senior Jail Superintendent at Dhaka Central Prison-2 at Kashimpur.

“Daud Merchant was being held here in a case. He secured bail on Nov 19, the papers reached the jail on Nov 29.”

Gazipur Detective Branch OC Amir Hossain said none of his personnel was at the jail gate during the release, but a detective police in Dhaka has confirmed that the 45-year old was arrested as soon as he stepped out of the prison.

Merchant, who was serving life sentence in an Indian jail since 2002, was reported absconding by Mumbai police after being released on parole in April, 2009 to visit his family in Mumbra, a small town about 40 km from Mumbai.

The Detective Branch then arrested Merchant on the night of May 28, 2009 from the residence of one Kamal Mian at Mourail in Bramhanbaria district.
