She gave the instructions in a video conference on Monday with Sylhet divisional commissioner and police commissioner after the Cabinet meeting.

"Recently there has been a problem at Shahjalal University (Science and Technology) ; I want to know about it from the police commissioner.

"I am instructing you to take action against those creating such problems or terrorising educational institutions irrespective of their political affiliation," she told the Sylhet police chief.

Two groups of the Awami League's student wing in SUST fought a turf war on Thursday. An outsider, Suman Chandra Das, 22, a student of Sylhet International University, died after being shot during the clash.

Das was an activist of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the ruling Awami League’s student affiliate.

Authorities closed the university for an indefinite period following trouble and four cases have been filed over the incident.

At a media briefing the next day in Dhaka, BCL President Badiuzzaman Shohag said that outsiders, not BCL activist at SUST, were responsible for the clash.

"I have seen that in case of these types of chaos in educational institutions, non-students and outsiders are more involved than the students," Hasina said during the video conference with the Sylhet administration.

Speaking on the murder of a Rajshahi University teacher on Nov 17, she said these incidents could be 'controlled' if the perpetrators could be immediately brought to book.

"We want you to take proper measures in this matter," the prime minister told the Sylhet police chief.
