British citizen Mezbah Uddin Ahmed, 72, returned to Bangladesh on Nov 10.
Police said he was an uncle-in-law of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's maternal cousin Sheikh Shahidul Islam.
"His relatives were unable to reach him on phone since last night. They broke the door of the house to find him dead, " said Banani Police Station OC Bhuiyan Mahbub Hossain.
According to a member of police at the spot, the body was found lying on the floor beside the bed. Blood marks were found on the bed and the toilet, he said.
Police is not yet certain whether it was a murder. Three including the building's caretaker and security guard have been taken to the police station for questioning.

Ahmed was living alone in the apartment in the six-storied building in Banani. His relatives live in the other apartments.

Relatives said, Ahmed's wife is a Sri Lanka national and the couple's two daughters live in the UK.

OC Islam said that the Crime Investigation Department has reached the spot and started investigations.
