Police seek custody to question 11 over RU teacher murder

Eleven people have been shown arrested over the murder of Rajshahi University teacher AKM Shafiul Islam.

Police produced them before the court of Rajshahi Metropolitan Magistrate on Monday and sought a 10-day remand to interrogate them, Motihar police OC Alamgir Hossain said.

The court might hear the matter on Tuesday, said OC Hossain, the investigating officer of the murder. "The court has ordered the 11 into jail."

Among them is Humayun Ahmed, the principal of Islamia Degree College, a stronghold of Jamaat-e-Islami's student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir.

Another teacher of the college Fazlul Haque is also among the arrestees.

The others are Mosharraf Hossain, Abdullah Al Mahamud, Mashiur Rahman, Hasibur Rahman, Jinnat Ali, Saif Uddin, Rezaul Karim, 'Sagar' and 'Arif'.
Shafiul Islam, who taught sociology at the university, died after being hacked by assailants on Saturday afternoon.
Police had detained 34 people over the killing, said OC Hossain.
"Of them, 11 have been shown arrested after initial interrogations. The issue about the rest will be dealt with later," he told bdnews24.com.
