Family meets Kamaruzzaman

Family members of war criminal Mohammad Kamaruzzaman, who is awaiting execution, have visited him in the jail.

Eight members of the family, including the Jamaat-e-Islami assistant secretary general’s wife Nurunnahar, entered Dhaka Central Jail at 10:40amand left at 11:30am on Saturday, Jail Superintendent Forman Ali said.

The family members who visitied the Jamaat leader, sentenced to death for his war time atrocities, also include his daughter Atia Noor, daughter-in-law Shamim Ara, nieces ‘Roksana’, Shahana Zebin and ‘Afroza’, nephew Monwar Hossain and brother-in-law Abul Kalam Azad.

None of them spoke to the journalists waiting outside the jail.

Kamaruzzaman’s lawyer Shishir Monir said the Jammat leader was in “a fine condition.”

His son Hasan Iqbal earlier in the morning had said that it was a regular visit.

He said they visit Kamaruzzaman once a month. The last visit was on Jan 31. The jail authorities fixed Feb 28 for the next visit, he added.

The Second International Crimes Tribunal sentenced to death the Mymensingh unit chief of Al Badr on May 9, 2013.

The Supreme Court upheld the verdict and published its full version on Feb 18.

The accused has a chance to file a review petition within 15 days from the publication of the full verdict.

However, the defence told journalists that they wanted to count the period from the day of the receipt of the Nov 3 verdict that is on Feb 26.

Kamaruzzaman’s lawyer Monir said they would file a review petition before the deadline ends.

Another Jamaat Assistant Secretary General Abdul Quader Molla was hanged to death on Dec 12, 2013 for his wartime atrocities.
