Dhanmondi Police Station OC Abu Bakr Siddiqui said the incident occurred in front of the Sobhanbagh Mosque around 6:30am Tuesday.

The victim has been identified as Ayesha Akter Ripa, 27, a resident of Lalmatia.

Ripa was heading towards Lalmatia with a friend on a rickshaw in the early hours of Tuesday. A group of muggers on a microbus drew up alongside the rickshaw and yanked away at a bag from her hands, the OC said quoting eyewitnesses.

As Ripa’s hand got stuck in the handle, she fell from the rickshaw and was dragged back along the road. The attackers, though, managed to flee with the bag.

Locals tried to take her to Dhanmondi’s Bangladesh Medical College and Hospital, but she died on the way.

The body has been sent to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital for autopsy.
