Lakshmipur jail officials suspended

Lakshmipur Jail Superintendent Mahbubur Rahman and Jailer Jainul Abedin have been suspended.

The home ministry's move came as allegations of irregularity inside the prison surfaced, Lakhsmipur's Deputy Commissioner (DC) AKM Sultan told reporters.

Among the various irregularities that had come to light, a convict's marriage ceremony in July had made news headlines.

Aftab Uddin Biplob, a convicted murderer and the son of controversial local mayor Abu Taher, was married amid festivity in the Jail.

The prison marriage of Biplob, whose death sentence was commuted by the President in 2011, raised eyebrows.

The jail authorities, however, maintained from the outset that it was held without violating prison rules.

Even State Minister for Home Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal was of the same opinion.

On Tuesday, Lakhsmipur DC Sultan visited the prison, 

A prison official, preferring anonymity, said that he recovered Tk 25,000 in cash from the inmates and found mobile phones being used inside the jail.

The district administration chief also found irregularities regarding the jail hospital, he added.

The move to suspend Lakshmipur jail's two top officials by comes a day after the visit on Wednesday.
