High Court orders special govt measures at ports to stop Ebola

The High Court has ordered authorities to set up special measures at all international airports, land ports and border areas against a possible spread of Ebola in Bangladesh.

The bench of justices Naima Haider and Jahangir Hossain gave the order after hearing a writ petition by lawyer Yunus Ali Akhand on Monday.

The court has also issued a rule asking why an order should not be given to make sure necessary measures are taken at all entry points including airports, the Supreme Court lawyer told bdnews24.com.

It also asked why the Bangladesh government should not be told to extend humanitarian support to the UN for the African countries reeling under the deadly virus.
More than 4,500 have died in the Ebola outbreak that started in west Africa, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).
Among the seven countries affected, Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone are in the worst condition.
On last week’s Thursday, a team comprising US embassy officials and experts of the US Centre for Disease Control working in Bangladesh visited Dhaka’s Shahjalal International Airport to check Bangladesh’s preparations to prevent the fatal Ebola virus from entering the country.
Earlier, Health and Family Welfare Minister Mohammad Nasim told journalists that they would buy a thermal scanner to get an automatic record of the arriving passengers’ body temperature.
