Md Jamir Ahmed, convenor of an organisation of transport owners and workers, on Sunday evening announced the temporary halt.

He said, "The strike is suspended until Nov 5 as the administration has assured us of meeting our five demands. The strike will resume if they are not met in time."

Sylhet Division's road communications with the rest of Bangladesh got cut off after two organisations of the owners and workers started the indefinite transport strike on Sunday morning.

The protesters alleged the district administration had assured them of addressing their demands within 72 hours on Sept 14.

But nothing had been done until Saturday.

Their charter of demands includes repairing the rundown roads in Sylhet Division, cancelling the registrations of CNG-run auto-rickshaw and human haulers and removing the corrupt officials at the Sylhet office of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA).

Sylhet's Additional Deputy Commissioner Nurul Haque told bdnews24.com that the transport owners and workers agreed to call off the strike for now after the administration pledged immediate necessary measures considering their demands at the meeting in the afternoon.
