Piash Karim buried

BRAC University teacher Piash Karim, better known for his controversial remarks on TV talk shows, has been buried at the Banani Graveyard.

Senior leaders of the BNP-led 20-Party Alliance and people from all walks of life took part in his Namaz-e-Janaza at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque on Friday.

His mortal remains were kept at the mosque's south plaza for people to pay their respects.

Karim died after suffering a cardiac arrest on Oct 13.

Hailing from Comilla, Karim shot into limelight for his performance on television panel discussions.

His comments on the Ganajagaran Mancha, demanding maximum penalty for war criminals, and trial process of suspected war criminals invited bitter criticism from various quarters.

Several organisations vehemently protested against his family's announcement to take his body to the Central Shaheed Minar for people to pay their respects.

Karim's family eventually backed down and the Dhaka University, too, rejected their plea.

His body was kept at the Square Hospital mortuary as several of his relatives living abroad had not returned.

It was taken to his Dhanmondi residence on Friday morning.

A Namaz-e-Janaza was first held at Dhanmondi's Baitul Aman Mosque before the body was taken to Baitul Mukarram.

Karim, dubbed a "Jamaat-e-Islami agent" by many, was hailed by the BNP as an 'uncompromising person who protested against injustice'.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and other party leaders had visited Karim's Dhanmondi residence on Oct 13 and offered condolences.

The party is observing a countrywide mourning putting its party flag at half-mast and hoisting black flags at all its offices.
