The Cox’s Bazar-4 MP surrendered to Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrates Court on Sunday and pleaded for bail.

Metropolitan Magistrate Md Maruf Hossain rejected his plea and ordered him inti prison after the hearing.

ACC Deputy Director Khairul Huda filed the case against Badi on Aug 21 after investigating an abnormal increase in his wealth based on the affidavits he submitted to the Election Commission before the 9th and 10th parliamentary elections.

He has been charged with concealing assets worth Tk 108.7 million and dodging taxes.

Badi secured a four-week anticipatory bail from the High Court on Sept 11 in the case and surrendered before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court after the bail expired.

Defence counsel claimed the MP was not involved with corruption and that he had bought low-lying lands and the price increased after Badi had filled them up.

Meanwhile, Badi's supporters agitated blocking the Cox's Bazar-Teknaf road protesting against the court's decision.

Traffic on the road came to a standstill for nearly three hours, starting Sunday noon.

A government investigation had revealed that Badi controlled contraband yaba's trade in the district.

A list, prepared by the Department of Narcotics Control, names him, along with several of his relatives, as being involved with the illegal trade.

The MP has been denying the allegations outright.
