Abdul Jalil, 50, suffered a gunshot wound around 12:30am at a tea stall in front of the Lakshmipur Police Lines, said Superintendent of Police Shah Mijan Shafiur Rahman.

He said the ASI, who hailed from Noakhali, had entered the stall to eat at the end of his shift.

The accidental discharge of his rifle occurred while Jalil was putting it down. He was shot in the chest.

The doctor on duty declared him dead around 1am after he was rushed to the Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital.

His body was later shifted to the hospital morgue, the SP said.
