Nur's sentence for wildlife smuggling

A Narayanganj court has sentenced to one year in prison the city’s Ward-4 Councillor Nur Hossain in a case filed under the Wild Life (Preservation) (Amendment) Act.

Senior Judicial Magistrate HM Shafiqul Islam delivered the verdict in the case on Tuesday.

Awami League leader Hossain is also the prime accused in the murder of seven persons in Narayanganj.

He was also fined Tk 50,000 and an additional three months in jail if fails to pay the fine, said Narayanganj Special Branch Inspector Md Nasir Ahmed.

According to court sources, at least 41 species of wild animals including several exotic and rare birds were seized during a raid at Nur Hossain’s house at Shimrail on May 15. Police had seized all movable properties owned by the man following a court order.
The wildlife department had filed the case later on the day of the raid.
Hossain was arrested from an apartment at Baguiati, not far from Kolkata's Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, on June 15.
He was booked under Arms Act and Foreigners Act for illegal trespass into Indian territory without valid travel documents and for illegal possession of a weapon. He is currently in jail there.
