Team formed to probe BRAC Bank robbery in Joypurhat

Bangladesh Bank formed a committee on Sunday to investigate the robbery at BRAC Bank branch in Joypurhat.

The central bank's Bogra region Deputy General Manager (DGM) Murtoza Ali is heading the three-member team.

The two other members are Bangladesh Bank Assistant Directors Nurul Huda and Sabbir Ahmed.

Robbers on Friday night knocked down the rear wall of the BRAC Bank's branch on the first floor of a building at Sadar Street and made off with almost Tk 20 million from the vault.

Bank officials estimate Tk 19.95 million has been robbed.

A four-member team of police's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) visited the crime scene on Sunday morning.

Joypurhat Sadar Police Station OC Abdur Rashid said they were yet to make any arrest or recover the stolen money.

But Rapid Action Battalion has so far detained five people for questioning.

RAB-5 Joypurhat Commander Maj Abdur Rahim said two bank security guards had been taken into custody on Saturday, while another three were held on Sunday. All of them were being interrogated, he added.

However, the branch has resumed its normal operation Sunday morning after the daring heist.

Clients would not be harassed or suffer any loss because the incident, said the branch Manager, Fazle Rabbi Chowdhury.
