Jamaat supporters clash with police in Sylhet

Jamaat-e-Islami supporter have clashed with police in Sylhet on Thursday during the country wide shutdown.

OC of Jalalabad Police Station Akhtar Hossain said, “Jamaat supporters took out a procession at Balura in the city’s Tukerbazar around 11 am on the first day of their 48-hour strike. The police fired rubber bullets and lobbed tear gas shells when the mob threw stones at them.”

The pitched battle lasted almost an hour.

Police had detained two activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir men from the spot, the OC added.

Shibir is the student affiliate of the Jamaat-e-Islami.

Death sentence of war crimes convict Delwar Hossain Sayedee was reduced to imprisonment until death on Wednesday.

The Jamaat-e-Islami called a 48-hour-long strike on Thursday and Sunday, demanding its senior leader’s release.
