Police, however, could not confirm the man’s identity.
Kaliganj Police Station OC Anwar Hossain said the encounter took place past midnight on Tuesday on the Kalinganj-Jibannagar road.
A firearm, one round of ammunition and a machete had been recovered from the spot, he said.
"The robbers fled after a gunfight that lasted for at least ten minutes. Police found a man with gunshot wounds at the spot," said the police officer, adding that he had been taken to the hospital where the doctors declared him dead.
Two police constables had been injured in the exchange of fire, he said.
