In Bangladesh it is the VIPs, and not ordinary citizens, who break rules, said Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader.

He arrived more than an hour late to inaugurate Dhaka Motorbike Show 2014 at Manik Miah Avenue on Saturday.

“I wanted to come on time but there was too much traffic so I walked more than a kilometre to get here,” said the minister after he reached the venue around 1:30pm.

“Traffic police told me to drive through wrong lane, but I didn’t listen, because I wanted to set an example.

“VIPs break the law, ordinary people don’t. There are those who pose as MPs by using fake Parliament stickers on their cars … there are fake doctors, fake journalists who ply on the roads. They are committing a crime by using these labels on their cars and pretending to be someone they are not.”
The minister said he would talk to relevant authorities to make sure these kinds of behaviours were no longer tolerated.
“Educated folks and VIPs will have to abide by the laws. Attitude is a little thing but it makes a huge difference,” quipped Quader.
The Motorbike Show he inaugurated was followed by a car rally on Saturday. More events will be held on other parts of the city on Sept 13 and 20, said officials of the event’s organiser Bangladesh Event Management Services (BDEMS).
Motorbike shows will be held on Sept 18 and 21.
