A cabinet meeting presided over by PM Sheikh Hasina on Monday cleared the Railway Security Force Bill 2014 the bill that now awaits law ministry vetting.

"The step has been taken to make the Railway Security Force Ordinance 1976, introduced by military regime, a law,” cabinet secretary Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan told the journalists after the meeting.

Among the two security forces of Bangladesh Railway, General Railway Police (GRP) looks after passenger security. The other force, Railway Security Force, is responsible for protection of railway property and goods.

Bhuiyan also said, "GRP personnel mainly come from Bangladesh Police, whereas Railway Security Force is raised and groomed by Bangladesh Railway. The new law will be made after amending the existing ordinance."
