Registrar Entajul Haque lodged the case accusing the postgraduates of extortion and assault on Saturday afternoon, Motihar Police Station OC Md Alamgir Hossain told bdnews24.com.

The two other accused, besides finance and banking department student Tuhin, are fisheries department students Tonmoy Ananda Ovi and Mamun-Ur-Rashid.

“We have procured video footage of the incident from the university’s closed circuit camera which will help us identify others involved in this incident,” said the OC.

Earlier in the day, the trio was temporarily suspended from the university.

University spokesperson Ilias Hossain said Vice-Chancellor Md Mijanuddin took the decision to suspend Tuhin, who was relieved of his post as BCL RU unit general secretary Friday, and his affiliates for assaulting acting Chief Engineer Sirajum Munir and two other staff on Thursday.

“The Disciplinary Committee, Academic Committee and Syndicate will later decide on their permanent expulsion.”

Ovi is also the vice-president of the university unit and Mamun is a member.

A group of Chhatra League activists, led by Tuhin, assaulted Shirajum Munir following an argument at the administrative building on Thursday. Vice-Chancellor’s office peon Sumon and security guard Abul Kashem were also beaten up at that time.

Following the incident, ruling Awami League’s student wing’s central committee on Friday replaced Tuhin with Khaled Hasan Biplob as the acting general secretary.

BCL leader Tuhin is allegedly involved in many criminal activities.

Recently, Chhatra League faced harsh criticisms after photos of him with a gun in his hand were published in newspapers.

The then Organisational Secretary Tuhin was also expelled temporarily from the organisation in July, 2012, when he was allegedly got involved in the murder of an RU student during a clash between two BCL factions.

He was also involved in a clash between two BCL factions over the collection of funds for construction of the Padma bridge.

Meanwhile, the university officials on Saturday demonstrated and held a rally on campus in protest against the assault on the chief engineer and two other staff.

The RU Teachers Association also expressed grave concerns over the incident and demanded that those responsible for it be punished.
