The incident took place in front of Government Titumir College on Wednesday evening, close to the office.
Arup Barua is a senior engineer with the internet-only newspaper.
"After work, I was walking towards Wireless Gate in the evening when five or six men stopped me and started hitting me.
“They took away my wallet and mobile phone," he said.
There were important documents and an ATM card in the wallet, besides some cash, he said.
Banani Police Station Sub-Inspector Abu Bakr said police were trying to catch the criminals.
