Padma boat mishap: 1 found

The body of one passenger was found after a boat capsized in the Padma River in Kushtia's Daulatpur on Tuesday.

Around 8pm Wednesday night the body of Mala Akhter Poly, 25, was found in Garai river, a tributary of the Padma. Kumarkhali Police Station OC Rafiqul Islam said locals called the police when they spotted the body.

The officer said an eight-member diver team from Khulna is scouring the river from Raita in Bheramara to the Hardinge Bridge to trace the 11 passengers still missing. They have not yet located the boat.

The motorised fishing boat was carrying at least 22 Eid holidaymakers to an island from Bairagir Char when it capsized under a strong current and rough winds.

Locals rescued six people shortly afterwards.

On Tuesday, the local administration said at least 15 people had been missing but revised the number to 12 on Wednesday.

The missing have been identified as -- 'Shondha', 4, 'Subarna', 6, 'Tinni', 7, 'Bithi', 10, 'Keyamoni', 10, 'Swapan', 20, 'Bibha', 22, 'Shipon', 26, 'Jamal', 26, his wife 'Sumi', 20, 'Shahajul', 28, and 'Kalu', 32.

Daulatpur police said they hail from the Upazila's Farakpur and Gangarampur villages.

Relatives of those still missing have thronged the river bank; many of them were seen sobbing, while waiting impatiently for news of their loved ones.
