‘Last goodbye’ to Baby Maudud

Family, friends and well-wishers have bid final farewell to senior journalist, writer and former MP AN Mahfuza Khatun Baby Maudud.

The ambulance carrying her mortal remains were brought to the Banani graveyard at 10:45pm Friday, where she was buried in the grave of her husband Advocate Md Hasan Ali.

Her body was taken there from the National Press Club where a funeral prayer was held.

Earlier, grief descended on her Dhanmondi home after her body was brought there from United Hospital in Dhaka, where she breathed her last in the afternoon.

Relatives, colleagues and many personalities gathered there to see her and pay their respects for one last time.

Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu, former home minister Shahara Khatun and International Crimes Tribunal Prosecutor Ziad Al Malum, among others, had gone to her home to console the grieving family members.

The family held a funeral prayer right before the Esha prayers in front of her house.

Another Namaj-e-Janaza was held at the Dhanmondi Eidgah ground after the Esha prayers which was attended by local MP Fazle Noor Tapash and Baby Maudud’s colleagues and relatives.

Her body was then taken to National Press Club around 9:30pm.

The family said her Qul Khawani will be held at the Dhanmondi home next Friday after the Asr prayers.

The senior journalist passed away in the afternoon in Dhaka's United Hospital after a long battle with cancer. She was 66.

She was the Social Affairs Editor at bdnews24.com since 2009.

Her close friend Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had rushed to the hospital after receiving the news of her death.

Maudud was born in Kolkata on June 23, 1948.

Her father Abdul Maudud was a judge. Her mother's name was Hedayet-un-Nisa. She was the third among six brothers and three sisters.

Beginning her career as a journalist in 1967, Baby Maudud worked for the BBC, Daily Sangbad, Ittefaq, BSS, and Weekly Bichitra before joining bdnews24.com.

She was elected to a reserved women's seat in the Ninth Parliament on Awami League ticket.
