SI Jahid’s remand over custodial death extended

Court has extended the remand of two persons, including sub-Inspector of Mirpur Police Jahidur Rahman, by four days in connection with the killing of a scrap-cloth dealer in police custody.

Detective inspector Nibaran Chandra produced Rahman and police informer Nasim Sheikh in the court on Wednesday after a 5-day remand.

Police sought another 10 days to question them. The court granted a 4-day remand.

The two were arrested on Jul 16 on charges of torturing and killing scrap-cloth dealer Mahbubur Rahman Sujon.

Police filed a case the next day accusing eight over the murder and the detective police was put in charge of the investigation.
The others accused are ASI Raj Kumar, constables ‘Anwar’ and Rashidul Haque and police informers ‘Nasim’, ‘Palash’, ‘Faisal’, and ‘Khokan’. All of them are absconding.
On Sunday, Sujon's wife Mamtaj Sultana Lucy filed a case against 10 people, including Mirpur police OC Salauddin Ahmed and Sub-Inspector Jahidur Rahman, with the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judges Court.
The court admitted the case and ordered a judicial probe into the incident.
