Minister admits extortion by police

State Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has admitted that ‘some members’ of the police force are involved in extortion and said action had been taken against those accused of the misdeed.

The junior minister made the statement after a meeting while responding to reporters’ questions on alleged extortion by police.
Transport owners and workers have alleging extortion on highways by policemen ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr.
Asked about the measures to combat the menace, Khan said: “The government takes action wherever crimes are evident.”
He said the administration ‘remains active’ to tackle traffic congestion, black marketing of transport tickets, terrorism, extortion, and activities of dope parties during Eid.
He added the government was ready to check any workers’ unrest in industrial areas including Savar, Ashulia, Narayanganj, Tonga, Chittagong and Khulna.
The junior minister said readymade garment industry owners pledged to clear employees and salaries and wages before the Eid.
