Justices Salma Masud Chowdhury and Md Habibul Gani gave the order on Monday after a writ petition was filed claiming the machine - ‘Formaldehyde Meter Z300’ which is used to detect presence of formalin in fruits in Bangladesh has been manufactured in the US to determine formalin level in the air.

The judges also issued a rule asking why the device used in testing food should not be considered illegal.

Sadhon Das and Sirajul Islam of Bangladesh Food Importers Association filed the petition on Jul 13.

Based on their plea, Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, BCSRI, and Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) have been told to test the instruments in use and submit the report in four weeks.

“Using chemicals in fruits is a horrid crime and it should be stopped. But destroying tonnes of fruits after checking them for formalin with an inappropriate device is equally threatening for farmers, traders, said Manzill Murshid who argued on behalf of the petitioners.
