PM lands in London for Girl Summit

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has reached London where she is scheduled to attend the Girl Summit, 2014.

A special Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight carrying the prime minister and her entourage touched down at the Heathrow Airport at 8:30pm BdST.

DFID official Anthony Smith, British High Commissioner Robert Gibson, Bangladesh High Commissioner Mijarul Quayes received her at the airport.

Hundreds of activists of ruling Awami League and its affiliates in the UK turned up outside the terminal to greet their party president.

At Tuesday’s summit, she will highlight her government’s efforts in eliminating child marriage, forced marriage, and the headway made by Bangladeshi women.

Before the meet, she is scheduled to meet her British counterpart David Cameron at his 10 Downing Street office, PMO sources said.

She will attend several events hosted by expatriate Bangladeshis before returning home on Thursday.

With the UNICEF as a co-host, the UK government is organising the first-ever Girl Summit aimed at mobilising domestic and international efforts to end female genital mutilation (FGM) and child, early and forced marriages (CEFM).
