270 gold bars in Biman toilet

Customs officials have foiled three attempts to smuggle in gold through Shahjalal International Airport in the span of 17 hours.

A Bangladesh Biman flight coming in from Bangkok was searched on a tip-off, Assistant Commissioner Ishrat Jahan on Sunday.

“A total of 270 bars of gold were seized from the aircraft’s toilet.” They weighed 32 kgs and were worth Tk 160 million in the market, said Jahan.

Passengers Mohammad Ali, 50, and Mohammad Sharif, 30, have been arrested as suspects. The flight refueled in Dubai before flying to Dhaka.
Earlier, two men who arrived on separate flights were caught with altogether 58 gold bars when they landed in Dhaka after midnight.
Assistant Commissioner Umme Nahid Akhter said Mohammad Iqbal, 32, arrived at 3am Sunday in a Qatar Airways flight.
“Fifty gold bars were found when his body and bags were searched. They weigh 5 kg and 830 grams. They are worth Tk 20 million,” said Akhter.
Amirul Islam, 27, flying in from Malaysia in a Malaysia Airlines flight, was caught earlier with eight gold bars that weigh 4.400 kg.
