One killed in Jessore 'encounter'

A man wanted for murder has been killed in Jessore during an encounter with police early on Wednesday.

The shootout, which also left five policemen injured, occurred at Abhaynagar Upazila's Shankarpasha village, said Abhaynagar Police Station OC Khabir Uddin.

The victim has been identified as Saiful Shikari, 35.

He was named in two murder cases and several cases of robbery and for possession of explosives.

Police arrested Shikari on Tuesday evening. Later, they took him along on a raid to recover fire arms.

OC Khabir Uddin told bdnews24.com that the 'encounter' erupted when Shikari's accomplices fired on the police raiders.

Shikari was caught in the crossfire and died on the spot, the OC claimed .

He said a locally made gun and two rounds of ammunition have been recovered from the spot.

Five policemen were injured during the shootout, OC Khabir Uddin said.

They are sub-inspector Arifur Rahman, assistant sub-inspectors Ahsan Habib and Touhidul Islam and constables 'Mehedi' and 'Mosahed'.
