Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate SM Ashiqur Rahman recorded the statement of Rana Hawlader on Tuesday, court police’s Sub-Inspector Muhitul Alam said.

He told bdnews24.com: “Rana has given the statement at the judge’s private chamber implicating himself and other arrested accused in the murder attempt.”

Meanwhile, another judge has remanded five other accused in police custody for four days again.

Metropolitan Magistrate Hasibul Haque granted the remand for ‘Harun’, ‘Mehedi’, ‘Monir’, ‘Jewel’ and Nur-e-Alam Siddiqui on Tuesday noon.

Police produced seven accused before court with a plea for granting a fresh 10-day remand for the five and sending two others, ‘Nazmul’ and Rana, to jail pending trial.

Miscreants on a motorcycle fired at Shamim, a member of the ruling Awami League’s Central Working Committee and former president of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), on June 19 in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi.

He sustained bullet wounds in the left hand.

Shamim was first taken to Bangladesh Medical College and Hospital and then transferred to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.

His uncle Nasiruddin filed a case with the Dhanmondi Police Station on Jun 20.

RAB claimed that a partner of Shamim conspired to kill him because of business rivalry.

Shamim is one of the directors of privately owned Stamford University. He also has other businesses.

Shamim served as the BCL president from 1994 to 1998. He was also a BCL leader of Jahangirnagar University (JU) unit.

Born in Shariatpur, he was vice-president of JU Central Students’ Union from 1989 to 1991.
