Police said Zakir Hossain aka Kangali Zakir, killed in the encounter, was the prime accused in Sergeant Ahad Parvez’s murder.

They claimed that the shootout took place near the Khidmah Hospital early on Friday.

Nipa Akter, wife of the deceased, identified the body of Zakir, 36, at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital in the afternoon.

DB Joint Commissioner in Dhaka Munirul Islam told bdnews24.com: “The people of Matuail know notorious criminal Zakir as Kangali Zakir. He was the prime accused in the Sergeant Ahad Parvez murder case.”

He said Zakir had been accused in 11 cases including three over murders.

The police officer said a group of snatchers, led by Zakir, had stabbed Ahad to death on Oct 28, 2000 when he chased the muggers.

Police arrested Zakir in Dec, 2010 from Gulistan area but he was released on bail two years later.
DB Deputy Commissioner Jahangir Hossain Matubbor earlier said a team of detectives rushed to a spot near the Khidmah Hospital after being tipped off about a mugging incident.
Several motorcycle-borne snatchers opened fire on police when they arrived, he claimed.
"A man was injured when police fired back. Doctors at Dhaka Medical College Hospital declared him dead on arrival," Matubbor told bdnews24.com.
