They abstained from work forcing two factories to declare a holiday for the day.

Industrial police's Inspector Mirza Saijuddin said troubles erupted at Savar Textile, Surma Garments at Icha Noadda area, Baxter Brenton Limited at DEPZ's old zone, Yagi Bangladesh Limited at Baron area and Shaccon Company Limted at Jirani's Panishail area.

He said Surma Garments workers had abstained from works demonstrating since morning demanding salaries for June and Eid bonus.

The situation turned worst when three workers were allegedly beaten up by the factory owners' henchmen.

The workers walked out of the factory and took position on the Birulia road. Workers from Savar Textile joined them.

They pelted police with stones when the latter tried to intervene.

Police fired several rounds of rubber bullets and teargas canisters to disperse the agitating workers.

Meanwhile, workers of Baxter Brenton and Yagi Bangladesh observed work abstention to press for similar demands.

Workers of Shaccon factory claimed at least 20 of their colleagues were injured when they were attacked by the owners' henchmen.

The injured were given first aid.

They say factory authorities shut the factory for three days last Tuesday after several hundred workers protested against a low wage.

Those who led the demonstration were singled out and attacked on Saturday, they claimed.

It was not possible to verify the claims as the factory authorities were not available for comment.

An organisation of RMG workers took out a protest procession at the Palli Bidyut area in the morning protesting against attacks on fellow workers.
