Several departments of the Rajshahi University are yet to publish their finals results even a year after the examinations were held.

Many department heads attributed the stalemate to failure of the teachers to correct answer scripts on time.

However, the erring teachers were let off the hook as the university does not have any authority to take action against them for such dereliction of duty.

Results of various final exams of genetic engineering and biotechnology, folklore, psychology, fine arts, population science, agronomy and agricultural extension, dramatics, geology, biochemistry, anthropology and Arabic departments are yet to be published, six to 10 months after the examinations.

The university's rules stipulate publication of results within three months of holding the exams.

But there's no provision to take punitive steps against teachers for violating the rules.

Students of 2009-10 session of genetic engineering sat for the third-year finals in June last year.

A year later, they are still awaiting the results.

They say they are preparing for their final-year tests though they are yet to get their third-year results.

Students of 2008-09 and 2012-13 sessions of the department are also in limbo. They have been waiting for results for nearly 10 months now.

Department Chairman Anil Chandra Deb said: "The delay is mainly because some teachers have not submitted the answer scripts on time."

He sidestepped a question when asked why actions were not taken against those teachers.

"More than one academic meeting has been held over this issue. The teachers have been asked to publish the results soon," said Deb.

The situation is worse at fine arts and psychology departments.

Fine arts students of 2010-11 session say they finished their second-year tests in August last year but the results are not yet out even after 11 months.

Students of 2008-09 session are also waiting for results for 13 months now.

Subrata Kumar, a student of the department, lamented: "Our four-year honours has stretched to six years. And the results are not even published in 10 months."

Department head Abdul Matin Talukdar blamed the delay on classroom shortage and "lots of practical tests".

On the other hand, there are two batches in psychology department in almost every year.

The students of 2006-07 session are awaiting their MA results for 11 months while 2007-08 students are yet to get their honours results 14 months after sitting for the exams.

Students of 2008-09 session are waiting for their third-year final results, without which they cannot sit for the honours final exams.

The university's folklore students of the 11th batch have not got their honours final results even after 10 months.
Their predecessors sat for MA exams seven months ago but like many departments, their results too have not been announced yet.

The final results of geology department's 2008-09 session have not been published in 10 months.

Moreover, there are several other departments like dramatics, anthropology, Arabic, biochemistry, zoology, botany are also stuck in the limbo. Various batches of these departments are awaiting results six to eight months after their exams.

Examination controller Anowar Hossain said regular tests and on-time results would have eased 'session jam'.

"We have requested the university authorities to take necessary measures," he said.

The university's Vice Chancellor Mizanuddin said notices had been sent to faculty heads to publish results in due time.

"A law may be passed in the next syndicate meeting with a provision for punitive measure against teachers if they fail to evaluate answer scripts on time," he said.
