2 ‘extremists’ killed in Jhenaidah ‘encounters’

Two alleged extremists have been killed in two separate ‘gunbattles’ with police in Jhenaidah.

Police could not provide details about them.

Four policemen, including an SI and three constables, were also injured in the encounter early on Saturday.

Extremists hurled locally made bombs on a police patrol in Hrishkhali Aambagan under Harinakundu Upazila around 2:30am, Jhenaidah Superintendent of Police (SP) Altaf Hossain said.

Police fired back triggering an encounter. The criminals fled after a while.

Police recovered a body from the spot, the SP said.

A light gun, two rounds of bullet and six handmade bombs were also found there.

Harinakundu police constables Shariful Islam and Shafique Ahmed were injured during the encounter, the police official added.

Meanwhile, police raided a field in a village under Kotchandpur Upazila around 1:30am receiving a tip-off that a group of extremists were holding a clandestine meeting there, Kotchandpur police OC Fazlur Rahman said.

The criminals opened fire as police approached and police fired back.

Later police found one of the criminals with bullet wounds and rushed him to the hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Police recovered a pipe gun and three rounds of bullet from the spot.

Two policemen --- SI Nazmul Hasan and Constable Firoz Ahmed – were injured during the shootout, but were released after first aid.
