Speaking at a seminar in Dhaka on Friday, he said those who had brought an army-controlled caretaker government in 2007 through conspiracy were the ones who tried to foil the Jan 5 national elections.

“Unfortunately, we find that people of some sections are still against democracy; they continue the conspiracy. Razakars and Mir Jafars always remain among the 160 million people of the country. (They) are still among us. They’ve kept their efforts on,” he said.

Joy, also the ICT advisor to the prime minster, was speaking at the seminar titled ‘Democracy and future Bangladesh in light of the Liberation War’.

He said: “We saw that the one-eleven in 2007 happened due to their (conspirators) moves. That autocratic military government again grabbed power. They (the conspirators) then rushed to the military government to be in power... Do they believe in democracy?”

He said the conspirators again became active before the Jan 5 election.

“They demanded that the neutral election be put on hold. How a neutral election can be stopped? Is it possible? Is it democratic? That can never be democratic.”

Joy expressed the Awami League’s conviction to move ahead, frustrating all conspiracies, and said: “The fact is that conspiracies are on not only inside the country internationally too.”

“Will we be afraid of these conspiracies? Will we pay heed to them? No, we won’t. People of Bangladesh will decide what will happen in Bangladesh,” he said.

He recollected his ‘terrible’ experiences during military rule during his childhood.

Joy questioned the knowledge and education of some people who joined television talk-shows.
