Dhaka-Chittagong rail links snap again

A Chittagong-bound container train veered off the tracks at Narsinghdi, snapping Dhaka's railway communications with the port city for the second time in one day.

The accident in the area between Ghorhashal and Jinardi railway stations on Wednesday afternoon also cut the capital's rail links with Sylhet and suspended local train services.

Earlier, an oil-carrying freight train jumped the tracks at Sitakunda’s Fouzdarhat at 6am. Chittagong's rail link with the rest of the country resumed more than seven hours after that incident.

On Tuesday, another container train derailed on the Dhaka-Chittagong route at Bhairab snapping the services for six and a half hours.
Three accidents in two days on the same route have thrown train schedules on railway's east zone into disarray.
Schedules of several trains have been cancelled or changed.
Narsinghdi's Polash Police Station OC Shahdat Hossain told bdnews24.com two carriages of the train went off the tracks in Boribarhi area around 5:30pm Wednesday a little after crossing the Ghorhashal station.
The accident damaged a vast swathe range of railway tracks, he said. Hundreds of slippers were uprooted by the wheels of the derailed bodies.
The salvage operation started after a rescue train arrived from Dhaka, Hossain said from the scene.
