3 boat workers drown

A sand-filled boat has sunk in the Surma River, killing three workers.

The boat sank near an under-construction bridge in Mallikpur, Sadar Upazila on Monday morning, Sunamganj Sadar Police Station Sub-Inspector Farid Ahmed said.

The deceased are Jamir Ali, 22, Syed Ahmed, 28, and Simon, 27. They were asleep when the boat went down.

The SI said the boat was carrying sand from the Dhopajan quarry to the bridge construction site. At dawn, the boat began to sink as it approached the bridge.

Six workers were sleeping inside the boat. Three of them managed to escape, but the others drowned.

Later in the morning, fire service divers recovered the bodies from the river.
